What IS Fisher House? Fisher Houses provide a ‘home-away-from-home’ for military families to be close to a loved one at the most stressful of times — during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease or injury. The recently opened Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center on the campus of the South Texas Veterans Health Care System (Audie Murphy Division) treats service members who have suffered severe multiple traumatic injuries while serving their country. This is one of only five Level One VA Polytrauma Center in the United States, and the only one that does not have a Fisher House. The road to recovery will be long, and these heroes need family by their side to face the challenges of rehabilitation. The 16-suite Fisher House will provide lodging completely free of charge during their stay, playing a critical role in supporting these brave wounded warriors.
What’s the mission? Because members of the military and their families are stationed worldwide and must often travel great distances for specialized medical care, Fisher House Foundation donates “comfort homes” built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. Fisher House Foundation is constructing a new home to support the Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center on the campus of the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital in 2012. Groundbreaking for this new facility was held March 5, 2012. The Foundation estimates the cost of this home to be approximately $6 million, and welcomes your participation.
