Man Charged in Connection with Police Shooting

Police today charged a 34 year old man who allegedly pulled a gun on officers at a north side motel this morning with aggravated assault on a peace officer, 1200 WOAI news reports.

Officers say Bryan Torres, who lives in the 6100 block of Ingram Road, reached into his waistband for a gun when police knocked at the door of a hotel room on Jones Maltsburger where Torres and three other men were smoking marijuana.

The officer shot Torres in the upper body.  He is hospitalized with non life threatening injuries.  The officer suffered a hand injury in the scuffled that followed.

The police report says Torres continued to curse at officers while he was being hauled into the ambulance, at one point yelling 'Who shot me!' and throwing a gun holster to the floor.

Police say officers entered the hotel room and round marijuana being smoked, and a young child in the room.

As they were attempting to arrest Torres, they say he started struggling with officers and then reached for a gun in his waistband.

One officer yelled 'gun!' and the other pushed Torres away as he aimed the firearm at the officer.  That's when the officer fired one shot.

Two other people in the room were charged with various offenses, after a large quantity of marijuana and heroin were found in the room.  One of the individuals was also arrested for having an outstanding arrest warrant.
