Strong Job Growth Reported in Metro

The region's economy continues to surge, with metro San Antonio reporting a 5.3% unemployment rate in December, substantially lower than the national jobless rate and even lower than the statewide rate, 1200 WOAI news repots.

The eight county metro added 6200 full time jobs during the court of 2013. The economic recovery was slowed somewhat in 2013 by the government shutdown and the sequestration budget cuts, which hit local military contractors hard.

But Patrick W. Newman, head of Workforce Solutions Alamo, says the region's job recovery is strong.

He says construction, transportation, financial activities and health care all saw job gains in 2013.

"Should these preliminary estimates hold, our unemployment rate will have averaged 6.1% for 2013, much better than it has been for the last five years," Newman said. "We continue to sit strong with job opportunities available in our region."

With energy and the Eagle Ford Shale leading the surge, the region appears poised for solid job gains in 2014.
