Starting today, those cheap plastic grocery store bags can be recycled in the blue City recycling bins, Newsradio 1200 WOAI reports.
The step was made possible by the acquisition of a new type of equipment at the Solid Waste Department's recycling plant which allows the recycling of dry cleaning bags, grocery bags, newspaper bags, bread bags, produce bags, toilet paper and paper towel wrapping, water bottles case wrapping and zip lock bags with the zipper removed.
It was the addition of this new equipment that prompted the city to drop plans for a ban on the plastic grocery store bags.
The city asks that you remove any receipts and other items from inside the bags, make sure they are dry, and tied tightly before placed in to the blue recycling bin.
The equipment does not allow for recycling of those dark colored waste basket liner bags or large trash and leaf bags.
