Davis Pledges to Take Pre-K for SA Statewide

State Sen. Wendy Davis (D-Ft. Worth), the likely Democratic nominee for governor, wants to expand Mayor Julian Castro's 'Pre-K for SA' early childhood program statewide, 1200 WOAI news reports.

In a rare joint appearance with Democratic Lieutenant Governor candidate Leticia Van de Putte at a San Antonio school, Davis said her 'Great Start, great Texas' program would build on the accomplishments of Pre-K for SA.'

"San Antonio is leading the way, providing full-day quality pre-K," Davis said.  "With the right leadership in Austin, we can set the right priorities."

Mayor Castro appeared with Davis at the event.

"We must have new leadership that is focused on retaining and recruiting the next generation of great teachers," Davis said.  "We need new leadership that advocates expanding access to higher education for high school students.  And we need new leadership that tirelessly promotes Pre-K and early childhood education so that Texas children are on the right path from the get go."

Davis says her program would ensure that every eligible Texas child has access to quality, full-day pre-K, and promote early childhood reading so that every child is reading at grade level by 3rd grade."

Davis said her program would be paid for through the expanding Rainy Day Fund, which is replenished by the revenues from the state's booming oil and gas industry.
