Non Tolled Expansion on Loop 1604 Underway

Relief is coming for motorists on one of the consistently most dangerous stretches of highway in Bexar County, as ground was broken today on a $23 million project to widen Loop 1604 to four divided lanes between converse and Interstate 10 on the east side, 1200 WOAI news reports.

Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff says the new lanes will not be tolled, thanks to a creative form of financing known as 'pass through.'

"We have financed it in a way that as the re-imbursement comes from the state based on traffic flows, we can amortize the debt with the state income coming in," Wolff said.

Wolff says traffic volumes have drastically increased on the stretch of highway due to the large number of trucks rolling two and from the Eagle Ford oil fields.

It also will provide more transpiration for a huge new Dollar General warehouse being built in the area.

"Some 500 jobs, and this will be very helpful to them in providing their transportation to and from tthe distribution center that Dollar will have on 10 and Foster Rd," he said.

A total of six transportation projects are being contemplated across Bexar County using the same type of funding which will enable non tolled lanes to be built.
